What are Potential Transformers? Explain its Principles & Applications.

Transformers are utilized for multiple applications and that is why we have several types of transformers available for the same. Though most transformers are utilized for stepping up or stepping down the voltage. But there are a few transformers that are also utilized for the measurement of current and voltage levels. The potential transformer is also one of those transformers which helps step down the voltage to a safe and required level.

A Potential Transformer is a sub-type of Instrument Transformers. Though the construction of these transformers is similar to the other transformers. But the size, components, and design of the potential transformers make them efficient for excellent performance. In other words, they are also termed voltage transformers. They reduce the voltage level to the desired level by taking the measurement from relays or meters. It helps in offering high accuracy when reducing voltage levels for specific applications.

Principle of Potential Transformers

The potential transformer utilizes the same working principle as other transformers which is Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction. But as it is used for measuring high alternating voltage, the construction and the configuration of the potential transformer varies. It consists of two primary windings and one secondary winding. The high-voltage network is attached in parallel to the primary winding, whereas the multimeter which is utilized for measuring voltage is connected to the secondary winding.

Due to the electromagnetic law of induction, both the primary and secondary windings are joined magnetically for proper functioning. Any reduction in the voltage network connected to the primary winding can be determined with the help of the voltmeter connected to the secondary winding.

Applications of Potential Transformers

Potential Transformers are utilized for a wide variety of applications, including:

  • One of the primary applications of Potential Transformers is to measure voltage. It measures the voltage at several points in an electrical system to step down the voltage to the required level.
  • It is possible to troubleshoot big electrical issues in the power grid that occurs due to the fluctuation in voltage. The voltage level can be monitored constantly to reduce fluctuations and supply stable voltage.
  • Most metering devices make use of potential transformers, as that helps in getting the accurate measurement to know about the total power consumption.

Potential transformers are as important as any other transformer as it offers support to the electrical system in different ways. Other than the above-mentioned applications, it is also used in protective relaying applications for protecting electrical systems by providing voltage measurement on time. If you also wish to make use of potential transformers for any residential or industrial setting, we recommend buying from MACROPLAST.
